The Meridian First Light House

The Meridian First Light house channels the essence of the iconic Kiwi bach - a focus on recreation, socialisation, and outdoor living. Victoria University of Wellington has been selected as one of 20 university teams to compete in the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 - the first-ever entry from the southern hemisphere. The Solar Decathlon is an award-winning program that challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The decathlon challenges teams to demonstrate inventive clean-energy solutions by building solar-powered houses. The Meridian First Light House utilises simple strategies to minimise energy consumption and maximise solar energy. In May 2011 the house was set up for public viewing in Frank Kitts Park, on Wellington's waterfront. Right now it's being shipped to the USA where it will be re-assembled for the competition beginning in September. http://firstlighthouse.ac.nz/home/ http://www.solardecathlon.gov/about.html
