About Stephen A'Court

I am an experienced commercial photographer, based in Wellington, the capital city and in all ways the centre of New Zealand. We live in a small, beautiful city, surrounded on all sides by steep hills and by the sea.

In essence, here's what I'm about: make people look their best. The world and the world’s people are less than perfect, visually, and could do with improvement. One portrait at a time, I can do it.

A photograph is not real life, after all.

I photograph people at work in office buildings & factories. I also photograph food, beautiful objects & building-interiors. I create portraits for business people, as well as headshots for performers of all stripes.

I am a qualified member of the NZ Institute of Professional Photography    www.nzipp.org.nz

I have photographed literally hundreds of professional theatre & dance productions. I work onstage and in the studio. My work is used all sorts of theatre advertising and in reviews. I worked at discounted rates in the arts world. I have had a close connection with the New Zealand School of Dance for almost 20 years.

I am married and I live on the hills above Miramar. We have two small children. I have had two big solo exhibitions of dance and portrait work, and I am currently working towards a third one. I love old American blues. I follow Formula 1, major league baseball and USA politics & culture. I have an appreciation of single malt whisky. I also have a deep feeling for the land & byways of my own country. Many are unique. Lake Waikaremoana, where I have visited many times, is the best example I can think of.

I think about my photographs, and about the way light works, almost as an obsession.

I am available for assignments and my work is for sale as prints and as rights-managed image-files. Call, to talk, or email me through the Contact button here.
